So far, 19 people are said to have been killed in the Iranian protests, since the election results were released, according to reports coming out of Iran. This mindless violence, orchestrated by the government and their supporters, is further fuelled by their severe press restrictions and the holding, without trial, of members of the opposition. The people of Iran are continuing to brave the circumstances and get onto the streets to protest, and to get news and pictures out of the country, and western leaders have begun to speak out too. Obama's language has become a little more forceful, and Brown's expulsion of two Iranian diplomats, in response to Iran expelling two of the UK's Tehran staff, has given a gesture of solidarity to the Iranian people. It's still very unclear how this will all pan out though because those in power are doing their best to ride the storm.

THE VOILENCE CONTINUES
The reported deaths are only the beginning. There are plenty of people who have 'disappeared' aswell. It seems that the government is planning on using a mixture of violent clampdowns, press bans, communication shut-downs and forceful removals of opposing voices, to stem the tide of public opinion against its policy of ignoring the publics opinion. How ironic is that! All it would have needed to do was to respect the publics opinion and give it the correct result in the recent elections, and the proof that shows the validity of the figures which they are presenting. It seems that the public wont accept anything else than this at this point because the trust is now entirely broken between those in power and the people. The general public have had enough of this senseless oppression and want out. This public hatred vented at President Ahmadinejad, but much more surprisingly, also at the spiritual leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, looks like it has the potential to end their careers in a sudden fashion. And who would have predicted that only a couple of weeks ago?

THE WEST SPEAKS OUT
Thankfully the west has begun to use its voice. Obama has used very clever language, expressing a need for an end to the violent clampdowns and kidnappings, but not addressing it personally to any of Iran's leaders. He has not used Ahmadinejad or Khamenei's names at all, and is doing what he should do. Showing solidarity openly to the Iranian people without scaring them with visions of him and the marines invading their country. So far he has acted impeccably, publicly, during this situation, as has Brown, so on this foreign policy initiative you would have to praise them both.

THE TRUTH HURTS FOR OBAMA
On a related point, there is something about Obama's appearance recently. He has aged considerably in most of the photos you see, after only a few months in the White House. Sometimes you get a feeling when he is talking that he never expected it to be that hard, so maybe he is a president who is a little bit different, and maybe this might help the Iranian people in their time of need. He came out of nowhere. Nobody would have predicted him even being one of the final contenders for the presidency just 18 months before he took office, so maybe those that do seem to have our politicians in their pockets, didn't fully get to him by the time he was elected. John F. Kennedy, just before he was assassinated, made two speeches in which he referred to hidden industrial powers being a dark force in our civilisation, and that it would take the biggest battle for hundreds of years for us to defeat them and gain back the control and use of our world. If Obama makes any speeches like that, start praying for his safety, but for now we must hope for a safe and non-violent end to this Iranian debacle.

IRAN'S CURRENT SITUATION - THE PARALLELS WITH THE WEST
We may have industrial powers that guide how we live our lives, but they have a spiritual leader who, on this evidence, has the potential to shackle his people, as commerce has imprisoned us. Hopefully the people will prevail there, and maybe they will be able to show us a new system that's transparent and based around the needs of the people. That would be a positive legacy, if they do manage to achieve it.
