President Evo Morales has suspended the United States DEA, and all of its "Anti-Drug" operations, in Bolivia, indefinitely. He has accused the Americans of shooting Bolivian farmers and of infiltrating & controlling the countries government, armed forces and police. He also says that the US was behind last years failed coup, that killed 19 people. Morales was outspoken, and angry, at what he saw as un-lawful interventions by the US. He said "From today all the activities of the US DEA are suspended indefinitely. Personnel from the DEA supported activities of the unsuccessful coup d'etat in Bolivia. We have the obligation to defend the dignity and sovereignty of the Bolivian people". If these charges are correct, why aren't the western media talking about it in a big way?

MORE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THE DEA
Morales has given the American's 3 months to leave Bolivia, and he reports some even more serious allegations against the US. Speaking about the DEA he said "The worst thing is, it did not fight drug trafficking; It encouraged it". And he reckons he has the evidence to back it up. Some evidence was presented at a separate news conference last week. A government minister, Juan Ramon Quintana, presented some paperwork that were supposed to prove US involvement in the Coup, amongst other things. He said Morales wanted to show it to Obama when he takes office. In fact, either Morales, or one of his ministers, has been throwing allegations at the Americans, almost daily, this past few weeks. Maybe with the end of the Bush era, they feel they can get more fairness out of the next administration, so they are raising their voice in this way, at this time.

COCA IN BOLIVIA
President Morales believes that the wrong coca farmers are being targeted by the DEA. You see, not all of the coca plants are used to make cocaine for western markets. The Bolivian people chew coca leaves, and have always done so. Its a tradition to them & is an important part of their economy. So there are legal farmers who sell leaves to their domestic market, and there are illegal farmers who sell to the international drug trade. Morales believes that the DEA is killing the legal farmers, so it can boost its figures for killing "cocaine growers", and that they are in turn protecting the illegal farmers, and helping them get their drugs out of the country.

THE CONSTANT ANTAGONISM FROM THE STATES
These are serious charges to be directed at the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Their job in Bolivia is supposed to be to rid the country of the illegal coca farm's that produce cocaine for western markets, not to make the country more unstable. Evo Morales is a left-wing president who counts his friends as Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, and Cuba's Fidel Castro. He, like them, believes that a country's wealth should be shared amongst its people, not by the elite few, and that a social system should be in place in each country to look after all of its citizens, in particular the most vulnerable. This obviously goes against the wishes of the capitalist powers, in particular the US, and this is one of the main reasons these country's have always had negative un-wanted influence's from America over the years. The fact that South America is so close, geographically, to the US does not help either. Maybe this new US administration will start to have more humane ties with South American governments in general. One can only hope.
