There are only 2 serious possibilities for the people of Iran. The first is a life of servitude under a dictator, and a sombre life that would be. The second is some form of an uprising, leading to many years of civil unrest between competing factions in the country. Both of these options are incomprehensible to most of us, but there's a good chance that one of those will be rolling in the coming few months in Iran, and the entire country will be drawn into it. This will be the legacy of this un-believably arrogant move by the president, and his backers. There is also the possibility that he was correct, but judging by the crowds on the streets, and the stories coming out of Iran, it seems highly unlikely.

WHAT WAS HE THINKING?
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has not only hurt his own people and their democracy, but he has given the capitalist powers an added opportunity to lambast any country that is being lead in a different direction, by a leader who has ideas. The west tends to dump the Iranian president in with the likes of Chavez & Morales, and this Iranian problem will impact their international status to some degree. As for Ahmadinejad, well you cannot go on a crusade wielding a sword. It just doesn't work anymore, and moreover, it will have the opposite effect. It will turn people against you. The funny thing is Ahmadinejad has actually spent a great amount of time building up the international public profile of his presidency and of Iran in general. No doubt this was backed by the Supreme Leader of Iran (Ali Khamenei), or even possibly directed by him, because he does seem to hold much more sway over the population than the president could ever hope to. Now the spotlight is even more firmly on both of them because of this, and because of our more acute awareness of the life, society and the people of Iran. This decision to defraud them was, in effect, a suicide note of sorts.

WHAT NEXT FOR THE BLOOD BROTHERS?
Khamenei should be ok because his moves have been shrewd up to now, staying in the background and allowing Ahmadinejad take the majority of the flack. He also has his 'spiritual position in the world' to back that up too, but Ahmadinejad is not so lucky. There are only 2 directions now for him, become a dictator or leave the office of presidency. He has lost the respect of too many people it seems, and he now has blood on his hands. The blood of the many students and protestors that has been spilled, and will possibly continue to be spilled. He has set Iranian against Iranian. And this is not the 80's, with the media of the 80's. It will not go away because the international media seem to have taken to this story like a duck to water, so he will find it hard to retreat from the public eye. He will also find it hard to keep any form of oppression out of the public domain. The technological revolution is beginning to come of age, and the latest trend, Twitter, has been helping get the story out of Iran, minute-by-minute, as have blogs and various other online sources. His modernising of Iran will haunt him daily if he chooses the dictator route.

THE PEOPLE OF IRAN
The public outburst of sympathy towards the people of Iran from the international community, and in particular the online community, will give them strength. It will tell them that they are correct, and that they should not sit back and take someone telling them who will run their country. But this will be a horrible twist if it does happen because there are so many rebel groups, waiting to take up arms for their own independence in different parts of the country, that this could erupt like Iraq did. This is a very dangerous part of the world, and if Ahmadinejad had of been honest, and passed over power to Mir-Hossein Mousavi, whom we are all lead to believe has won, then the Middle East would have a strong Arab nation, built around education, spirituality and technological advancements. Now it just may be looking forward to more carnage. That's all.
