To some this was an inevitable story that has been bubbling under for many years, but this week it became a big story in some of the worlds media after the young man in question gave an interview to Spain's El Mundo newspaper. The 24 year old, whom the Dalai Lama pronounced as the reincarnation of a spiritual leader as a baby, has decided to turn his back on his Messiah role. This has come as a major shock and embarrassment to some in the Buddhist community, but Osel Hita Torres is now studying film in Madrid, Spain.

HOW HE WAS CHOSEN
At just 14 months of age Osel Hita Torres was brought to see the Dalai Lama, by his parents, because they believed that he had spiritual powers. In the meeting, held in the Indian city of Dharamsala, the Dalai Lama began the process of taking this baby from an entirely normal life in Granada, to a life of almost complete solitude. After some months, and out of a group of 10 candidates, Torres was chosen by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of Lama Thubten Yeshe, and renamed Lama Tenzin Ösel Rinpoche, or Lama Ösel.

CHILDHOOD IN SHACKLES
From just a few months old he was worshipped in a throne, and was only allowed to mix with other people who were also said to be reincarnations of past Buddhist leaders. He was never allowed to watch tv, play sports or be with girls, and he spent most of his life in solitude, whilst everybody around him was telling him he was a god. Sure he was only a child, so how could he even comprehend what a god is? Poor little fellow must have had a lonely and confusing youth. In the interview with El Mundo, Torres says that he had not even seen 2 people kissing each other before he was 18. This is depriving a child of the basics of life, and could not be considered spiritual by the majority of the world. And worse still, when they begin this process at such a young age, it leaves no choice in the child's own head, because he has been conditioned to think like his minders, and to accept his circumstances as normality and reality, as is more usually the case. But luckily for Osel, he had the strength to break free and to sample the world in it's entirety, before he made a conscious decision on what role he would like to play in life.
