Barack Obama attempted to defend his choice as this year's Nobel Peace Laureate, just days after ordering an extra 30,000 troops onto the battlefield in one his countries two major current wars. The other being in Iraq obviously. Make up your own minds, but many will feel unconvinced

The Times has published a story alleging that senior Afghan government and Taliban officials have confirmed to them that the Italian Army has been paying cash directly to the Taliban, across Afghanistan, as protection to prevent attacks on their troops. Is this not a war?

Relatives of those who died in the 911 massacre have been allowed to attend the hearings, but the suspects are not allowed to open their mouths in court. Because of this they had refused to enter the courtroom, but three of the five did eventually show up, only for one of them to leave again
Public Inquiry Into Death Of Baha Mousa Opens In London

Baha Mousa was a 22 year old Iraqi whose wife had just died when he was taken prisoner by the British Army. He was tortured for 2 days and eventually died from 93 injuries. His two very young children are now without a parent, but the family may get some comfort from this public inquiry

Merkel is complaining that the public are not talking about the heroics of Germany's soldiers due to the WWII factor, but it's more likely due to the public not being totally behind the Afghanistan invasion & subsequent war. The design & timing of these awards will cause further controversy
